Pool Sport Game Ideas, Maintenance Tips and More
What type of pool is easiest to maintain?
When it comes to your home, routine maintenance is important. This includes your swimming pool. Think of your pool as a giant bathtub. This is a bathtub that is outside, meaning that is can get much dirtier than a typical bathtub that sits inside. Now, you would never get into a bathtub that is dirty. The same concept applies to swimming pools. You also want to plan ahead with what type of pool you want depending on what you want to use it for such as pool sports or lounging.Easiest Pools to MaintainThe reality is that maintenance is inevitable when it comes to any swimming pool; however, some pools require more maintenance than others. While there are lots of factors that should play a role when you are looking for a swimming pool such as price, size, longevity, durability, and the possibility of repairs, maintenance is often overlooked. As a result, many people refer to maintenance as a hidden cost of owning a pool. When it comes to finding a swimming pool that requires the least amount of maintenance, it is important to consider the three most common types of swimming pools.Concrete Pools
One of the most popular types of swimming pools is a concrete pool. Most people like them because they are the most sturdy. Most people also find them to be the most aesthetically pleasing as well.
On the other hand, concrete pools are also the most expensive. This is true in terms of sticker price as well as maintenance. There are a number of reasons why concrete pools are so expensive to maintain. These include:
The role of acid washing The possibility of algae that grow continuously The pool needs to be cleaned by a trained professional at least once per year Steel brushing is required for the pool at least once per week There are two circulations that the pool’s filter must carry out every day The pool needs to be refinished occasionally The chemistry of the water must be monitored closely
With this in mind, many people who buy a concrete pool see this as an investment. As a result, they often hire a trained professional to help them maintain the pool.Vinyl Pools
A vinyl swimming pool is probably the second most popular type of swimming pool. Those who choose to go with a vinyl pool often like this option because it is the cheapest in terms of sticker price. At the same time, there is still a fair bit of maintenance that has to be done with liner pools. These include:
The liner is prone to tearing and leaking (because it is not concrete), so the liner might have to be replaced from time to time, which can be costly The water chemistry still needs to be followed closely The filter will have to circulate the water at least once per day There are some parts of the pool that might not have an adequate amount of circulation, which can lead to algae growth
This list is shorter than concrete pools; however, there is still quite a bit that has to be done.Fiberglass Pools
Finally, the easiest pool to maintain is called a fiberglass pool. The list of maintenance tasks with this type of pool is much shorter. Some of the tasks include:
The water has to be circulated once per day by the filtration system The water chemistry has to be checked before the pool can be used
A fiberglass pool is not prone to growing algae, which is one of the main reasons why this pool is easier to maintain. Anyone who is looking for a pool that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance may want to consider going with a fiberglass pool.Maintain Your Pool & Get Pool Accessories

Why do swimming pools turn green?
With summer in full swing, you are probably thinking about heading out to your backyard pool (or neighborhood pool) to relax and have fun in the sun while cooling off in the water. Then, when you look outside, you realize that the water is green! Suddenly, your plans have changed. Now, you have to figure out how to address the green water in the pool. The good news is that there are a few ways that you can handle this. Take a look at some of the helpful information that we have put together below to help you with your green pool! Why Does a Swimming Pool Turn Green?
The reality is that walking out to a green swimming pool is not that unusual, even if it is the bane of any pool owner. The green tint in the water is usually caused by small, microscopic plants that are called algae. The truth is that there are always algae growing in the pool. The job of the chlorine is to keep the algae in check while preventing the water from turning green.
Algae are incredibly small plants. This also means that they grow very quickly. A day or two without proper amounts of chlorine can cause algae to grow out of control, turning the pool water from a beautiful, crystal blow to a gross, green color.
While algae can grow in the pool itself, a green pool requires a thorough inspection. Sometimes, the algae might be coming into the pool through a crack in the pipe or pool wall. There could be an external contaminant that is simply making your job harder. While there could be some situations where you need to reach out to a trained professional, there are also a few immediate solutions that can help you handle the algae that have turned your beautiful pool into a green wasteland. How Can Pool Owners Fix their Green Pools?
There are a few easy ways that pool owners can treat their green pools in the blink of an eye. First, note that algae tend to start showing up in swimming pools when the chlorine level drops lower than 1 ppm (part per million). This leads to an algae bloom that quickly expands and turns the entire pool green. The way to quickly kill an algal bloom is to use a chlorine shock.
Now, it is important to make sure that people are not in the pool at the time (and because the pool is green, this should not be a problem). Try to make sure this is done either at dusk or overnight. The chlorine in a shock of this manner is not stable, so it could evaporate from the pool, irritating people who are nearby.
The amount of shock you are going to need depends on how dark the water is. For example, if the green is just a light tint, use a double shock, which is 2 pounds of chlorine for every 10,000 pounds of water. On the other hand, black water merits 4 pounds of chlorine for every 10,000 pounds of water.
Once you have administered the shock, the pool water should turn gray and cloudy in a day. Then, the pool filter has to be run continuously until the water is a nice, blue color once again. Why Is Blue the Ideal Pool Color?
Blue is the right color of pools for a number of reasons. While it is true that chlorine might give pools a slight blue tint, the reality is that most pools are blue because the water is clear and they reflect the gorgeous sky that is above! Because many people are used to blue pools, they place blue tiles in their pools as well. This is another reason why clear water (which is ideal) looks blue.Visit Dunn Rite Pool Products Today!

What To Wear To A Pool Party?
Summer is a time that is meant for fun in the sun. Without a doubt, you (or someone you know) is going to get invited to at least one party at the pool. How are you supposed to know what to wear? Sure, you want to bring a bathing suit if you plan on getting wet; however, what is the right attire? Is this a beach barbecue theme? Is this a birthday party at the pool? Maybe this party is going to be a day club or some sort? Going out to a pool party means only wearing a bathing suit for part of the time. What else should be worn? There are a few tips to keep in mind.
Your Clothes Are Going To Get Wet
Yes, you are wearing your bathing suit because you assume this is going to get wet; however, the clothes you are wearing on top are going to get wet at some point as well. Look, you aren’t going to be able to pay attention to what is happening all the time. You might get too close to a cannonball. A wet child might jump on you at some point. Therefore, try to opt for natural fabrics that are going to be able to absorb this forecast. This might include cotton or linen. Linen tends to be lighter and can keep you cool.
The Bottom Is Important
When you are planning your pool attire, you should focus more on your bottoms than your top. Your top is probably going to end up being your bathing suit (if you are a girl) or some sort of light Hawaiian shirt or athletic shirt (if you are a guy). For guys, the swimming suit is a good bottom; however, for girls, think about wearing something stylish or colorful. Something light and frilly will help you stay comfortable. One of the most popular choices is actually denim cut-offs of some sort!
Remember to Bring a Light Jacket
When you go to a pool party during the summer, the last thing you think about is getting cold; however, summer breezes are a thing for a reason. Once the sun sets, the party is going to keep going. This is where a light jacket is going to be helpful. This is even more important if you have been swimming. The breeze on your wet shoulders could end up being a serious problem. This is another reason why a jacket matters. Think about going with something red, orange, or yellow. You might even want to find something that works well with your swimming suit!
Don’t Forget About the Accessories
If you are trying to coordinate something special for the pool party, then you need to think about the accessories as well. One of the most popular styles is something called a basket-weave bag. A basket-weave can make a great bag when it comes to carrying certain items such as a water bottle, camera, or sunscreen. It has the feel of the beach, is easy to carry, and is durable. In addition, don't forget about hats! A broad-brimmed hat is a good idea because this provides added protection for the face and neck against the sun!
The Classic Look for a Pool Party
For both guys and girls who are looking to find something classic to wear to a pool party, the white button-down is the look to choose. This is something that will work for just about anything. Just remember that this shirt is going to get wet, so it is a good idea to stay away from anything that might need to be worn to work in the near future. This can be layered over the swimsuit with ease. Then, it can be tossed in the wash easily once the party is over.

Why are swimming pools blue?
If you are looking for a great way to enjoy the summer sun, you could be thinking about hosting a pool party with a
pool volleyball game in your backyard or taking a stroll to the nearby neighborhood pool. At the same time, you might also be wondering what gives pools their blue color. While most people know that a green pool or a brown pool is something to stay far away from (or clean up if they own it), why is blue the right color of a pool? How do we know that a blue pool is safe for use? There are a few points to keep in mind.
Why Swimming Pools Are Blue
If you are looking for something to drink and you pour a glass of water, you do not want it to be blue. In fact, you expect it to be clear, right? On the other hand, you are totally fine jumping in a pool that is blue. In fact, you expect it. Why is this the case?
Reflects Sky
There are a few major reasons why pools are blue. First, pools tend to turn blue because they are reflecting the sky. The sky is blue, so the water in pools tends to look blue as well. While this is a part of the argument, it is not the entirety of the explanation.
Blue Tiles or Fiberglass
Next, pools still look blue even when the sky is mostly cloudy, so there must be more to it, right? Yes! Pools are also blue because many people use blue tiles or fiberglass to construct their pools. Therefore, even though the water itself appears blue, people see the tiles or fiberglass underneath, which has been constructed to be blue. People like blue tiles and fiberglass because they expect to see a blue pool. The clear water looks blue due to the construction materials.
Water Molecules
Even this is not enough to explain everything. It is also important to explore the chemistry of how water molecules work. Water molecules get their energy from the sunlight that strikes them. When light strikes the water molecules, they absorb some of the visible spectrum while reflecting other colors. In this case, the water molecules absorb the red wavelengths of light from the sun. In return, they reflect the other types of light. This includes blue. As a result, water molecules in the pool reflect blue light to the eyes of nearby swimmers and sunbathers, causing the water to look blue.
Water Depth
Finally, some people would also like to know what determines how blue the water looks to the naked eye. This has to do with the depth of the water. The deeper the pool goes, the more opportunity there is for light to get absorbed by other water molecules along the way. This is what makes pools that are particularly deep that much darker when thinking about how blue they look.
How to Turn Swimming Pools Blue
If you walk outside and expect to see a blue pool, you might be surprised if this is your first trip out there this summer. Green pools are a common problem. This tends to happen due to algae that might be present in the pool. The good news is that a chlorine shock can clear out the algae quickly. Then, the pool filter can be used to remove the dead algae the next day. Finally, you can resume your regular pool maintenance, helping the pool turn that beautiful blue color once again.

Fun Facts About Swimming and Swimming Pools
Swimming is an absolutely fantastic sport. It is a test of both strength and endurance. It is a sport that people can perform by themselves (as long as they have a body of water). Because there is almost no impact on the body’s joints, it is hard for people to hurt themselves swimming (unless they swim into the wall)! Anyone who is interested in swimming pools might find some of our swimming pool fun facts intriguing!
Free-divers Have Impressive Lung Capacities
Today, there are scuba divers who use tanks of oxygen to reach some of the deepest depths of the ocean. Before scuba gear came into existence, free-divers specialized in this very activity! While most people can only hold their breath for a minute or two underwater, free-divers can hold their breath for up to ten minutes at a time! The world record for holding your breath is actually more than 24 minutes! These incredible athletes are the product of years of training and hard work.
Many Swimmers Have Incredibly Flexible Toes
In order for swimmers to make their bodies as hydrodynamic as possible, they need to point their toes as far back as possible. This means that many swimmers can point their toes so far that they make a straight line with their lower leg! Some swimmers can even lay with their backs on the ground, point their toes, and touch the ground! Who knew that a swimmer would require such amazing flexibility?
An Olympic Swimming Pool Can Fill Thousands of Bathtubs
It takes about 70 gallons of water to fill up a typical bathtub. Depending on the depth of an Olympic swimming pool, it could have close to 700,000 gallons of water. This means that it could fill 10,000 bathtubs! Think about this while playing pool volleyball or pool basketball this summer. Or while you are launching in for your 15th cannonball, someone get the hose!
Swimmers Sweat an Incredible Amount
When people are in the water, they often don’t think about just how much they are sweating. After all, the pool is already wet, so do swimmers even sweat? In fact, swimmers sweat a lot! One study indicated that swimmers lose about 125 mL of sweat for each km swam! While most swimmers might not be aware of this because they are swimming, this is why swimmers get thirsty! It is essential for swimmers, like all athletes to stay hydrated before, during and after their swim.
Many People Cannot Swim
Swimming is important not only as a form of exercise but also for safety reasons. A survey was conducted in 2014 by the American Red Cross. This survey found that more than half of Americans are unable to swim!
The Youngest International Competitive Swimmer Was 10 Years Old
When people think about international swimming, they often think about Olympic athletes who are in the 20's. The youngest competitive international swimmer was actually ten years old! She represented Bahrain at the World Championships in 2015.
Tortoise Shells and Goggles
Goggles are important for allowing people to see underwater; however, many people don’t realize that the first goggles were actually made from the shells of tortoises! They debuted back in the 1300's in Persia. The rubber goggles of today didn’t show up until the 1930's.
The First Indoor Swimming Pool on a Cruise Ship
Today, almost every cruise ship has a swimming pool of some sort. The first cruise ship to feature one was called the Adriatic. She was a sister ship of the Titanic. She was also the fastest ship! On deck swimming pools have come a long way since that first one!
Swimmers Shave their Bodies
While most people know that swimmers shave their bodies, they might not actually know why. There is a common idea that swimmers shave to make them more hydrodynamic. While this is true, this is not the only reason why. Swimmers also shave because it removes the dead skin cells from their bodies. This allows them to feel the water better, allowing them to adjust their technique accordingly.
Swim Lessons at Two Months of Age
Parents who want to introduce their kids to the water early should know that kids can start swimming lessons at two months of age! The most common age to take swimming lessons is between one and four years old. Babies who start swimming lessons early are said to be safer while around the water.

How do I make my pool water crystal clear?
For those who have a swimming pool in the backyard, this is a fun way to not only stay cool during the summer heat but also entertain family members and friends. On the other hand, maintaining a pool is also hard work. Those who do not keep up with their pool maintenance might be disappointed when they see the quality of their water. Water can go from cloudy to hazy and even green in the matter of a few days. The good news is that there are a few ways to keep the pool water crystal clear.
Maintain Optimum Chemical Levels in The Swimming Pool
There is a common misconception that pool water can never be “crystal clear” because the chlorine will turn it blue. This is simply not the case. Many pools have blue water because they are a reflection of the blue sky.
In order to keep the pool water crystal clear, it is important to maintain the right chemical levels. The two most important levels are the pH and chlorine levels. Chlorine in the pool is used to kill both germs and bacteria. By killing these germs, bacteria will not be able to change the color of the pool. The chlorine levels should be between 1.0 and 3.0 parts per million, often shortened to PPM.
The pool’s pH level is used to measure how acidic or basic the water gets. The ideal pH is between 7.2 and 7.6. If the pool’s pH level is out of balance, not only will it be unsafe but it will also start to change color.
Provide Shock and Algaecide for the Pool Weekly
One of the most commonly overlooked steps of pool maintenance involves shock and algaecide. Those who are wondering why their pools turn green should know that the most common culprit is algae. Even if the chlorine and pH are within safe limits, there is some pool algae that may still grow around the pool, causing the water to turn green.
Shock and algaecide can be used to kill the algae, ensuring the pool water remains crystal clear. Now, these are strong chemicals that need to be used correctly. Therefore, make sure to read the package before using it. The amount required is going to vary with the size of the pool. Try to use shock and algaecide once per week to kill pool algae. Algae can turn the water green, yellow, or hazy.
Clean the Pool Filter
The pool filter plays a critical role in keeping the water clear. Many people believe that the pool filters do not need to be changed as long as they skim the pool regularly. This is simply not true. Yes, it is important to skim the pool regularly; however, the pool filter also has to be cleaned. This is a process known as backwashing.
The job of the pool filters is to clean dirt and debris that might otherwise be too small for the skimmer. If the filter gets clogged, it will not be able to do its job well. In order to backwash the filters, force water through the system in the opposite direction. When the water starts to look cloudy, this is one of the first places to look. Eventually, it might be time to replace the filters. Do this to keep the pool water crystal clear.
Avoid Baking Soda
Finally, it is important to address one of the most common misconceptions. Many people think that baking soda is a magical trick that can be used to kill anything in the pool. Do not use baking soda. It is a powerful base that will shoot up the pH in a matter of seconds. This is not a reliable pool chemical. Baking soda is best left to removing strange odors from the fridge.

Pool Party for Teenagers
Without a doubt, one of the highlights of the summer is all of the parties that unfold. Many of them take place in or around a pool. If you are looking to be seen as the cool or fun parent (or family), then it is important to throw the best pool party possible. There are a few ways to make sure a pool party for your teen is pulled off with aplomb!
Teen Pool Party Invites
Times have changed. In the past, invites for pool parties would have been pasted on lockers at school or mailed to people’s houses. When it comes to throwing a pool party today, this is not how invites are handled. Today, invites are handled using the internet. Therefore, talk to your teen and see what social media accounts are active. Pool party invites can be distributed through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and even TikTok. Think about what would work well with your teen’s friends! Perhaps throw together a quick video highlighting how awesome and inviting the pool is. This can go a long way toward helping you attract as many excited party guests as possible!
Teen Pool Party Décor and Party Favors
Once the invites have been handled, it is time to think about the party décor and favors that are needed to bring the entire event together. Think about using beach towels and awesome sunglasses that can be used to make great party favors. Remember that the more the pool looks like a day at the beach, the better the party is going to be.
This also means incorporating plenty of beach music. While it is a good idea to ask your teen what music he or she would like to use, try to push for beach music as much as possible. While your teen is going to want to incorporate a bit of hip hop, there is a way to make both of these work together.
If you really want to go all out, think about draping seashells and fishnet on the tables and walls to complete the look. This will let everyone know that this pool party is going to be absolutely amazing. Remember to have plenty of towels laying out for the party guests. This is going to be critical because some party guests are bound to forget to bring their own towels.
The Food for a Teen Pool Party
Now, the secret to having as many people show up as possible is to provide plenty of delicious food. Remember that teenagers are going to be hungry so there is no such thing as too much food. Ask your teen what he or she would like to have at the party. Then, be sure to provide this along with plenty of other options. It is a good idea to quickly ask if anyone at the party has any allergies to anything. Then, try to provide a diverse spread. Think about having an ice cream bar or something cold as well. Popsicle's are a nice touch. The more the merrier when it comes to food! This is why subs and pizzas are usually a great hit!
Organize Pool Activities
The highlight of any pool party is the activities that are going to be involved. Water games are plentiful and many of them get everyone involved by providing activities that spread from the deck into the water. Try to have a few games in mind and be sure to suggest a few to prevent the party from getting dull. Just keep in mind that the pool deck is going to be slippery when wet, so make sure everyone puts safety first.

pool day essentials
With summer right around the corner, everyone is planning to spend time at their backyard pool; however, the last thing anyone wants to do is make it outside only to realize that they forgot something and have to leave the sunshine! With this in mind, we have put together a list of the most important pool items that everyone has to bring with them to their next pool day! Use this as a guide to make sure that everyone brings everything they need! This will allow everyone to maximize the amount of time they spend outside!
Swimming Goggles
Anyone who wants to be able to see underwater has to make sure they bring goggles with them. There are lots of goggles from which people can choose. Those who like to swim laps might want to use smaller goggles with an adjustable bungee cord to ensure they fit perfectly. Anyone who wants to snorkel in the water should make sure their goggles have a helpful attachment for the snorkel itself!
Swimming Towels
Obviously, towels are a must. Not only can they be used to dry off but people can let them out and relax on them as well. Those who are planning on relaxing on the pool deck might want to bring two per person. One towel can be used to lounge while the other one is used to dry off.
Life Jackets and Floaties for the Pool
Yes, it is important for everyone to take swimming lessons to make sure they know how to swim; however, there are also safe ways for those who have not taken swimming lessons to enjoy the pool. Life jackets and floaties are a must! Make sure they fit the swimmer appropriately. It is also helpful to try them on before going to the pool. In addition, make sure the floaties are inflated enough to keep the swimmer above the water.
Sunscreen Is a Must for a Day at the Pool
There is a common misconception that as long as people are cool in the water, they cannot get sunburned. This is simply not the case. Everyone has to make sure they wear sunscreen when they go to the pool. Make sure to pick a sunscreen with a high SPF (sun protection factor) as well as UVA and UVB protection. It is important to make sure that all sunscreen is applied several minutes before entering the water. Otherwise, it might wash off. Those who want to be extra thorough might want to wear a UV swim shirt as well.
Hats Are Essential for Sitting By The Pool
Another great item to bring to the pool is a hat. While there are some prime chairs that might be located under umbrellas, most people know that they are few and far between. While putting sunscreen on the face is a good idea, it is also a good idea to wear a hat. While this will provide some extra protection, it will also keep the sun out of the eyes and face. This will make it easier for people to kick back and relax. Think about using a floppy hat or a straw hat.
A Waterproof Beach Bag to Carry Pool Essentials
Finally, everyone has to make sure they have a safe, convenient way to transport all of these items. This is where a waterproof beach bag can be helpful. Many of these bags have added pockets that can be used to protect certain items such as cell phones, car keys, and wallets. A beach bag can also be used to transport snacks and drinks for the whole family! Make sure to find a beach bag that is big enough to hold all of these items!
Don’t Forget About Pool Toys from Dunn-Rite
