What is Pool Play in Pool Volleyball?

Posted by Dunn Rite on May 30th 2023

The pool play round of a pool volleyball tournament is the first round of competition. Team members are divided into four or five pools in pool play. Each team plays other teams in their pool once. On the basis of their win-loss records, the teams are then ranked within their pool. Each pool's top two teams advance to the knockout stage.

How Pool Play Works in Pool Volleyball

Pool play is a round-robin format, which means that each team plays each of the other teams in their pool once. The teams are then ranked within their pool based on their win-loss record. The top two teams from each pool advance to the knockout stage of the tournament.

Win-Loss Record

The win-loss record is the most important factor in determining the ranking of teams within a pool. A team receives 3 points for a win, 0 points for a loss, and 1 point for a tie. The teams with the best win-loss records within each pool advance to the knockout stage of the tournament.

Ties

If two teams are tied in the standings, the tie will be broken by the following criteria:

  • Head-to-head result
  • Set difference
  • Point difference

Head-to-Head Result

If two teams are tied in the standings and have played each other, the team that won the head-to-head match will be ranked higher.

Set Difference

If two teams are tied in the standings and have not played each other, the team with the better set difference will be ranked higher. Set difference is calculated by taking the total number of sets won minus the total number of sets lost.

Point Difference

If two teams are tied in the standings and have the same set difference, the team with the better point difference will be ranked higher. Point difference is calculated by taking the total number of points scored minus the total number of points allowed.
