10 things you can do on a SUP
Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is an activity that is rising quickly in popularity. If you are interested in purchasing a stand-up paddleboard, then you need to know all of the ways you can put this great piece of equipment to use! Take a look at the top ten things you can do on a SUP.
SUP Surfing
Of course, one of the first activities that come to mind is SUP surfing. While the waves might be too small for a regular surfboard, this is not the case of a SUP! You can take the board out and increase your wave count exponentially! There are many surfers who say this is the best form of cross-training you can possibly do!
SUP Fishing
If you are looking for something more relaxing, then why not check out SUP fishing? This is a new way to enjoy this awesome activity. Now, there are fishing paddleboards that have been equipped with everything you need to experience this great sport in a new light. If you are just out for a day of enjoyment, you can easily fish from your inflatable stand up paddleboard.
SUP Yoga
Without a doubt, this is one of the most popular activities that you can enjoy on a SUP. You can place your board in the middle of the water and get your workout in for the day in a relaxed setting. You might even notice a passing dolphin or fish that will make it that much more exciting!
SUP With Your Dogs
Those who have taken out a SUP in the past might have seen some unique sights on the board! One of the new activities that people are falling in love with involves taking their pets out on the SUP with them! There is plenty of room for another living creature, including pets! Some paddleboards can even hold additional people! These are called multi-person paddleboards. Why not take your dog out with you? We've seen everything from potbelly pigs to goats as well, so use your time together to go on an adventure!
SUP Racing
Those who really want to enjoy a thrill have to check out something called
SUP racing! These are held all over the world during the course of the year. Invest in a new SUP that might be blue, white, red, or any other color under the sun! Just make sure it is long and skinny so it moves as fast as possible! Check out your local area or book a vacation to find SUP races to compete in. Even if it's just for fun, the experience will be one you'll remember.
SUP Touring
Another form of exercise, SUP touring involves paddling for long distances at a time without taking a break. In contrast, this is a test of endurance. If you are looking for long adventures that provide outstanding workouts, this is the way to go. These boards are typically wider so they can float better and hold the gear you need to keep yourself fueled for the journey! You can even pack for a secluded campout on your SUP and make a weekend of it!
The SUP Hammock
While this may come as a surprise, there is something called the
SUP hammock that you can create! If you put multiple SUPs together, you can attach hammocks to them as you cruise down the river! This is a great way to alternate between paddling and relaxing! This is a great way to experience the outdoors.
Snorkeling and Scuba Diving
Do you want to check out the wildlife that lives under the waves? This is the way to do it! You can take an inflatable stand-up paddleboard out, check out the coastlines, and see what lives underneath! There is an abundance of marine life under the surface just waiting to be discovered! Most SUPs have plenty of space to pack your gear and you could also attach a floating cooler if you want to make a day of it and bring some snacks. One point to be aware of is safety, you always want to go with a partner or group and make sure boaters can see where you are snorkeling or diving.
Go Out on a Romantic Date
There are plenty of ways to turn a trip on the SUP into a romantic date. Have a picnic. Watch the sunset. See someplace new. Whatever you do, just try not to fall in (unless this is a part of the date)!

Finally, you can also play a team sport on a SUP! Get a bunch of friends together and try playing some variant of hockey, tennis, basketball, or volleyball! There are always creative ways to play sports on a SUP! One new sport that is taking off right now is SUP Ball. Check out your local lakes and beaches to find a club or league to join. Can you sit on a SUP?
One of the reasons people love standup paddleboarding is that its a great way to get a
whole-body workout while enjoying the great outdoors. But lets be honest. Sometimes, rather than exercising, we just want to bask in nature, and the extra dose of relaxation that comes with floating on water while doing it.
The great news is
SUPs aren't just for standing anymore. With an accessory or two, you can transform your SUP into a fishing boat, a place to bond with your partner, child or dog, or even a kayak (though kayaking will also give you a bit of a workout). Converting your SUP in this way maximizes its versatility, and expands the range of ways you can use it to have fun.
You can
sit on your paddleboard without accessories too. Paddling while kneeling, you can give your legs a rest. And if you're not in a hurry to go anywhere, you can simply sit or lie on your board while its stationary, soaking up the sun, reading a book, or enjoying a cool beverage.
Here's just a sampling of what you can do while sitting on your SUP for a change:
Can you use a paddle board as a kayak?
For a whole different kind of adventure using your SUP, try adding a
temporary seat and a different paddle to ride ocean waves or light white water river rapids. Convertible paddles are available that allow you to switch between stand up paddleboarding and kayaking using the same paddle handle.
Fishing From a SUP
By adding a removable seat to your paddleboard, you can transform it into a fishing boat. The SUPs weight-bearing ability and stability make it especially well-suited to dropping your line and leisurely waiting for nibbles. Some folks prefer to fish from a folding beach-type chair rather than the lower profile seat, and there are chairs like this specifically designed to attach to
SUPs via special straps or other attachments. These chairs allow you to bend your knees while sitting. Be careful when selecting this type of chair, though, as not all are ideal for inflatable SUPs, which generally have more flex than hard boards.
Paddleboarding for Two
Adding a seat gives you the option of bringing a passenger along on your SUP ride. Parents of children who don’t yet know how to stand up and paddle – or who simply aren’t strong enough to do it for long periods of time – find this is a great way to bring your little one along, spend time with them, and slowly introduce them to the sport. Other accessories, like an umbrella that attaches to the board, can make your SUP even more comfortable for you and your passenger.
Photography while on a SUP
Standup paddleboarding takes us to some beautiful settings. How many times have we looked around while paddling and thought, What an awesome photo this would make! Taking great pictures while paddling is awkward at best. When you want to take a picture, it's handy that you absolutely can sit on a SUP.
Resting on a SUP
Adding a seat to your paddleboard doesn't stop you from standing up on it. SUPs have plenty of room for both. What it does offer is a way to give your legs a break that is more comfortable than kneeling.
Standup paddleboarding is one of the most enjoyable whole-body workouts there is. But SUPs are so much more than exercise equipment. To take advantage of everything else the SUP has to offer, try sitting on it!
