How safe are inflatable paddle boards?
When it comes to using an
inflatable stand-up paddleboard, this is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise, and engage in various activities. As paddleboarding has become more popular, there are lots of options that have hit the market. Therefore, it’s a good idea to look at the various stand-up paddleboard options available. For those who are wondering about inflatable SUPs, they often want to know how safe they are. There are a few points to keep in mind regarding the safety of inflatable stand-up paddleboards.
Stand-Up Paddleboards Are Safe
First, there is a myth that inflatable stand-up paddleboards are not as safe as some alternatives. This myth is simply not the case. Often people think that because inflatable SUPs are precisely that, inflatable, they are easy to puncture. They have visions of paddleboards striking a rock or a tree branch, popping, and deflating quickly. The reality is that inflatable SUPs are incredibly durable. They will not shred or pop just from running into a hard object on the water. They are designed to resist these stresses with ease.
Second, inflatable stand-up paddleboards are harder to flip than some of the other types of paddleboards because they tend to be slightly wider than some of the alternatives. As a result, they have a larger center of gravity, making them harder to overturn. Therefore, it’s harder for people to flip paddleboards or end up in the water.
Finally, because these paddleboards are inflatable, they're also slightly softer than hard paddleboards. A softer landing means that when the paddleboard gets wet, and someone slips and falls, they're less likely to hurt themselves. There is more cushion for the landing, making it less likely that someone will sustain a serious injury.
These are just a few of the reasons that inflatable stand-up paddleboards are safe options for numerous activities. At the same time, everyone needs to stay safe on their SUP.
Safety Tips While Using an Inflatable SUP
When it comes to using an inflatable SUP, it is crucial to keep a few safety tips in mind. No matter whether someone is using an inflatable paddleboard or a traditional paddleboard, safety should always come first.
Stand up paddleboarding safety starts with the environment. Check the weather before going out. If there is a storm rolling in, it might not be the best time to be outside.
Next, think carefully about where the paddleboard is going to launch in the water. Some places do not allow SUPs, such as designated swimming areas or locations with heavy boat traffic. Think carefully about where you want to push off using safety as your best guide.
It’s also a good idea to learn about local tides or currents in the area. Try to move your paddleboard out into deeper water to avoid going near objects hidden beneath the water’s surface. Be mindful of other people in the area and avoid boats. If you don't have a lot of experience on your paddleboard, stay away from swimmers until you get more comfortable controlling your board, for your safety and theirs.
Falling Safely on a Paddleboard
There are times when you might end up falling from your paddleboard. If this happens, you need to be able to fall safely. First, try to avoid falling headfirst. Ideally, you will be wearing a life vest, so falling backward is ideal. Also, as you fall, think about letting go of your paddle. Do not land on your paddle, and don’t allow your paddle to twist you as you enter the water. Once you fall off, you should be able to get back on quickly. If you have a leash, this process will be even easier.

Standup Paddleboarding With Your Dog
Many dogs can easily be trained to ride along with you on a paddleboard, opening up whole new worlds of outdoor fun. With a
paddleboard-ready pup, you can rack up all sorts of adventures with your best buddy—and you don’t have to find a pet sitter or leave somebody back at the campsite to watch the dog when you head for the lake or the beach.
Safety, of course, is critical when it comes to paddleboarding with a dog, and you have to put in some groundwork before the two of you ever shove off from shore. In this article, we’ll run down some of the basics of training a canine to be comfortable on a paddleboard and point out the best equipment for the activity.
Prerequisites for Paddleboarding With a Dog
Your dog should be a strong swimmer if you’re going to bring it along paddleboarding. Just like you, your dog also needs to wear a
Personal Flotation Device (PFD) when on the board, which means you need to get that furry companion of yours comfortable wearing one of these vests.
Another fundamental, of course, is obedience training. An uncontrollable dog isn’t a good fit, needless to say, for standup paddleboarding.
Training a Dog to Ride on a Standup Paddleboard
It might seem a little daunting to train Fido to ride your
inflatable standup paddleboard with you, but it’s a pretty simple process that jibes with many dogs.
First and foremost, you want your dog to be at ease around your paddleboard. Depending on a dog’s particular disposition, an unfamiliar object such as that can be unsettling or even frightening, so lay the board in your house or your yard where you and your dog spend a lot of time to drive home its utter harmlessness.
Once the paddleboard’s presence is no big thing for your pooch, it’s time to take things to the next level. Ease the dog into getting onto the paddleboard by putting a treat in the board’s forward part between where you’ll be paddling and the nose. Use a command such as “Jump on!” or “Get on!” when you give your dog the go-ahead to grab the treat, then reward him with another. Use an analogous command—“Jump off!” etc.—to direct the dog off the board, and then provide another treat.
Add the command to sit or lie down on the board once the basic routine is established. Do this process regularly for a week or two so your dog understands the verbal directions and becomes used to climbing on and off the board and sitting or lying on it.
Now you want to add yourself to the mix: With the dog on the board, stand where you’d typically do. Rock the board gently to simulate floating and wave-lapping, hold your paddle, and conduct your typical paddling motion. All of the above may or may not weird your dog out at first. Using treats and repetition more likely than not, your dog will get fully accustomed to this new game.
Once your dog’s got the dryland version of paddleboarding down, you’re nearly off to the races. Bring pooch and paddleboard to a suitably accessible and calm body of water and run through the routine again a few times on the shore. Ease the board into the water and try things in the shallows. Before long, you’ll be able to graduate to the full-on real deal.
On your first few paddles—and, really, on every paddle with your pet—pay close attention to its body language. Be aware of signs of stress—continuous panting, nervous pacing or circling—and be ready to abort if need be.
Choosing a Standup Paddleboard Suitable for Your Dog
Some kinds of paddleboard materials are on the slippery side of things for dog paws. An inflatable paddleboard is an excellent choice, providing a softer and more yielding surface for better traction and comfort.
You want to size your paddleboard appropriately to the dimensions of your dog. It’s absolutely possible to go paddleboarding with even large breeds as long as the boards wide enough and has a suitable weight capacity.
Our Dunn-Rite inflatable standup paddleboards are ideal for on-the-water trips with man’s (and woman’s) best friend, boasting a generous 32-inch width and a 350-pound weight limit. Put in enough time for your training exercises—and don’t forget the PFDs—and you and your four-legged companion should be all set for some tandem trips on your favorite flatwater!

SUP Surfing: Tips and Tricks
If you are thinking about taking up the great sport of SUP (stand-up paddleboard) surfing, then you need to keep a few essential tips in mind. The good news is that pretty much anyone can take up this sport as long as they are committed to the challenge! Take a look at some of the helpful information below!
Where Does SUP Surfing Take Place?
SUP surfing can happen pretty much anywhere! The vast majority of people who want to try SUP surfing will start with flat water, such as lakes and rivers. On the other hand, you can try this sport almost anywhere, including rolling beaches, because SUP surfing is an offshoot of traditional surfing.
For beginners, it is easier to start on flat water before trying to catch larger waves. SUP surfing presents a few unique challenges that might not be present with other SUP sports. Therefore, it is vital to keep safety in mind as well.
Safety in SUP Surfing
It is important to note that SUP surfing is one of the few SUP sports where a jacket is not required; however, it is still important to put safety first. Those who try SUP surfing need to be aware of the surf conditions and never try SUP surfing alone. While life jackets are not a requirement for surfing, it’s a good idea for many. Furthermore, everyone who tries SUP surfing also has to have a leash that attaches them to the board, which will prevent surfers from getting separated from their boards. Even on an inflatable SUP, which is an incredibly popular option for SUP surfing, it is still essential to have a leash. Try to pick a leash that is at least as long as the board preventing board recoil from smacking you.
Practicing SUP Surfing
If you want to get better at SUP surfing, you need to practice. When you go out to practice, find an area that isn’t surrounded by other surfers and swimmers. Avoiding other people nearby is helpful because you could end up striking someone with your inflatable SUP if it gets away from you.
Some of the challenges that you are going to face when you try SUP surfing include:
Launching and paddling the board past the waves that are breaking in the area
Learning how to catch the waves as they roll by
Surfing on the actual wave
With practice, all of these challenges can be conquered.
SUP Surfing Positioning
If you want to catch a wave, you have to be in the right position and then need to commit to the actual wave. As you wait for the waves to arrive, try to line up parallel to the incoming waves. Stand in a hybrid stance, which means that your toes should be facing the ocean while your paddle is on the toe side of the board.
Then, pick a wave and commit to it. Turn 90 degrees so that you are perpendicular to the wave as it comes in. When the swell gets close, take a few smooth and solid strokes to increase your speed. After a few strokes, the wave should catch up to you. Then, lean forward and establish yourself on the wave. Once you have caught it, extend into a surf stance!
As you catch the board, try to angle it on the wave to stay in the pocket of the wave. The pocket is where the breaking part of the wave meets the open, green face of the wave. It might be easier to angle the board slightly so that you face it with your toes. While these steps are straightforward, it will take some practice and patience!
If you want to get the most out of your SUP surfing experience, you need to have the right board. At Dunn Rite Pool Products, we have the boards you need to get started SUP surfing. Take a look at everything we have to offer!

SUP Polo
If you are looking for a fun, challenging game to play, then SUP Polo is the sport for you. Using your
inflatable paddleboard, you can do just about everything in this sport as you compete against family members and friends. There are a few key points that you should keep in mind when it comes to SUP Polo.
What Is SUP Polo?
SUP Polo is a combination of multiple games including water polo and lacrosse. This game is best played on inflatable SUPs. Usually, there is an area of the water that has been sectioned off. This will act as the boundaries of the course. Alternatively, you can also play this sport in a swimming pool. While SUP Polo started as a form of a gimmick, it has spread quickly and is now one of the most popular team-based events that you can play on an inflatable SUP.
The Rules of SUP Polo
There are a few rules that you should follow when you play SUP Polo. Each team has three players, although this can be easily modified to add more players if you wish. Typically, each game is about six minutes long; however, if you feel you have the energy, you can extend the matches. At halftime, the teams switch the direction in which they are going.
There is a ball that has been designed to be played only with paddles. Try to play with paddles that have a bit of a curve to them. Your goal is to scoop or usher the ball along the water. Then, you try to fire the ball into the net of the other team.
The game is meant to be fast and short. If you fall in the water while playing SUP Polo, then you are doing something right! Of course, the team who ends up with the most goals at the end of the match is declared the winner! This is an intense game that provides you with a fun workout as well!
What Equipment Do You Need?
There are a few pieces of equipment that you will need in order to play SUP Polo. These include:
Enough inflatable SUPs for everyone who will be participating
Paddles that have curves or scoops on the end that allow you to launch a ball at the goal
Sometimes, there are fins that you can attach to the bottom of your SUP to make the board easier to turn as you play
You will need a small ball that is easy to move and shoot during SUP Polo
You will need two separate nets of the same size to act as goals
You should have something that you can use to mark the boundaries of the course
While you can play SUP Polo on just about any body of water, it is better to find calm water.
Tips and Tricks for SUP Polo
As you get started with SUP Polo, you will find that this is a demanding sport that is meant to be played at a fast pace. While beginners can certainly participate, this is a sport that requires a lot of quick maneuvers in order to be able to keep up with the other players. Therefore, you should practice paddling, balancing, turning, and scooping with your arms in order to get better at SUP Polo.
There are two versions of the sport. The first is the non-contact version where players are not supposed to make physical contact with each other. On the other hand, nudging the board is allowed. The other form of SUP Polo is a contact sport, where you can knock people into the water to get them to release the ball. Think of this as the contact that takes place during men’s lacrosse.
If you want to give SUP Polo a try, then you need to have the right board. Inflatable SUPs work the best for this sport. Therefore, take a look at the selection of boards from Dunn Rite Pool Products! Then, get out on the water and challenge a few other players to a game of SUP Polo!

SUP Yoga
If you are looking to get the most out of your
inflatable stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) experience, then you have probably heard about SUP yoga. Once you get comfortable with the basics of SUP yoga, you might be looking for ways to increase the challenge. Of course, in order to challenge yourself with SUP yoga, you need to have the right equipment. This is where an inflatable SUP can be helpful. An inflatable SUP is a little bit wider than most other SUP options. This means that you have more room to try advanced SUP yoga poses.
So, once you have the right inflatable paddleboard, it's time to take on a few more challenging SUP yoga poses. There are a few advanced SUP yoga poses that you might want to try.
SUP Yoga:The Forward Bend
While this might sound like a straightforward SUP yoga pose, it takes a lot of core strength and balance to pull this pose off correctly.
To complete this pose, start in the middle of the board. Place your feet in the center. Then, place your hands together. Inhale, then sweep your arms in and up. Your fingers should be interlaced above you.
Once your fingers are in place above you, exhale. As you breathe out, bow forward. Finally place your palms on the board in front of you, using a forward bend. This should expand your chest and work your car as you lean forward. Keep your feet firm on the board as you complete this pose to prevent it from shifting beneath your feet.
SUP Yoga: Side Angle and Warrior Two Pose
This is a popular advanced yoga pose that is made that much harder in SUP yoga. Start by standing in the middle of your board. Then, step your left foot all the way back. As you do this, your right knee should naturally form a 90-degree angle. Ensure that your left foot is perpendicular to your right foot. Then, take your right hand and place it diagonally on the ground. You should be able to use your right shoulder to stabilize your knee in the process. While this happens, extend your left arm and point it to the sky. Breathe in at your hips and focus your energy in the hamstrings. This is a pose that will work almost your entire body.
Finally, once you have held this position for a few seconds, inhale and raise up into the classic Warrior 2 position.
SUP Yoga: Advanced Downward Facing Dog
This position starts with you seated on your board. Your ships should be low. Your arms should be extended out. From this position, take a few, deep breaths. Inhale and exhale deliberately. After this, windmill your arms forward quickly. Your right foot should step back into the plank position as you do this.
Then, lower yourself, lift your heart, and transition into an upward facing dog. Then, on the exhale, transition yourself into the downward-facing dog position. This advanced motion is challenging on a paddleboard, but a few practice attempts should help you get this down.
SUP Yoga:The Headstand
Finally, the headstand is a classic advanced yoga pose. To complete this pose, come down to your knees. Then, interlace your fingers. Make sure that your elbows are shoulder-width apart. After this, place the crown of your head between your forearms. Your crown should be nice and flat. After this, lift up your hips. Walk your feet up toward your face. Keep your hips above your shoulders. Line up your shoulders with your head.
Lastly, tighten your core and lift your body into the vertical position. This is a challenging pose so do not get discouraged. Practice makes perfect.
These are all challenging poses. One of the most important things that you have to remember during this process is that it is okay to fall in the water! If you fall in the water, simply get back up and try again! Check out Dunn Rite Pool Products today to take a look at all of the SUP yoga and inflatable paddleboard accessories! How Do You Stand Up On an Inflatable SUP?
For those who are looking for a new sport to try on the water, one of the most popular choices is stand-up paddleboarding. For those who haven't tried it yet, paddleboarding is a fun activity that everyone can partake in on oceans, rivers, lakes, and bays. This will provide everyone with a great core body workout and will allow everyone to experience everything that the great outdoors has to offer. Furthermore, this is a sport that people can try at all ages. It is great for all body types and skill levels. Some people even like to bring a child or pet along with them!
Of course, for those who want to get started in this sport, they need to know how to stand up on a stand-up paddleboard. While there are plenty of great stand-up paddleboard options including a new blue and white stand-up paddleboard, everyone has to know how to stand up. There are a few steps that everyone should follow.
Choosing the Right Stand-Up Paddleboard
One of the first skills that everyone has to master is standing up on a stand-up paddleboard. This starts with choosing the right one. For those who are doing this for the first time, the biggest tip involves choosing the right stand-up paddleboard.
It is a good idea to start with a 30-inch board that is about 11 feet long. This will provide a nice long, wide surface that is going to stay in place as people try to stand up. The board should feel comfortable and stable. If it won’t stay in place, then go for a wider stand-up paddleboard.
Inflatable stand up paddleboards tend to be wider and longer which make them a great SUP for beginners and enthusiasts alike.
The Process of Standing Up On a SUP
When it comes time to stand up on the stand-up paddleboard, start in calm, flat water. This should be done close to shore. This is where the water is going to be calm unless there are rolling waves in the ocean.
Once there is a nice, calm, flat area, it is time to try to stand up. The steps to follow include:
Move the board out into the water. While it is a good idea to start close to shore, make sure the fin is not going to hit the bottom.
Then, get into a kneeling position on the stand-up paddleboard. While on hands and knees, take a few strokes on each side of the board to make sure that that it is free to move in the water.
Next, slowly stand up on the stand-up paddleboard. Use one fit at a time. Make every effort to remain in the middle of the board. Try to keep the knees and feet parallel to the stringer. They should be should-width apart.
Keep the core centered over the board. Maintain a slight knee bend. Keep standing up until you reach the ideal pose and you are able to stand up straight.
For those who are doing this the first time, it is easy to fall off. Falling off of a stand-up paddleboard is nothing to be ashamed of. Simply hop back up on the board and try again. For those who get cold easily, it is a good idea to wear a thin wetsuit.
The Most Important Tip for Standing Up
Anyone who is going this for the first time needs to make sure they find the right stand-up paddleboard. It is tempting to try a smaller stand-up paddleboard because they look less intimidating; however, this is the wrong move. If the stand-up paddleboard is too small, a beginner is never going to be able to stand up. Then, they will get disheartened and quit. A larger stand-up paddleboard is better for beginners. This is where professionals can help.
These are a few of the most important tips that people need to follow when it comes to standing up on a stand-up paddleboard. It is important to make sure you find the right stand-up paddleboard for your needs. At Dunn-Rite Products, we have the latest line of stand-up paddleboards! Take a look at everything we have to offer! We will help you find the right stand-up paddleboard for your needs!

Stand Up Paddleboard Fishing
You're a fishing addict who's eyeing up that shiny new SUP. Almost involuntarily a question emerges in your brain: "
Can you fish from an inflatable stand up paddleboard?"
You wonder if you're crazy for asking such a question. After all, technically you can fish from anything that floats like an iceberg or a bathtub. That doesn't necessarily mean you
should. The more pertinent question would be, Can you fish from an iSUP without losing your gear, falling in the water or wishing the idea had never crossed your mind?
Truth be told, you're not crazy for having thoughts of stand up paddleboard fishing adventures. Yes, you can successfully fish from a paddleboard. No, you shouldn't do so without reading this first.
Throwing every fishing item you own onto your inflatable stand up paddleboard with no forethought could be, at best, mildly unpleasant. With a little preparation, however, you could be the envy of the water. Here are some quick tips for blissfully combining stand up paddleboarding and fishing.
What Do You Need to Bring When Fishing from an Inflatable Stand Up Paddleboard?
It's best to be a minimalist when fishing from a stand up paddleboard. You won't have as much storage as you would when fishing from a kayak or especially a boat. But if you stop and think about it, many times you bring more than you need when fishing from a boat anyway.
Being minimalistic helps you simplify the process and take only what you know will be effective which can make the trip less complicated and more enjoyable. Bring anything you would on a normal fishing trip such as gear, food and water, just with much less bulk.
Where Can You Go When Fishing from an iSUP?
In theory, you could go anywhere there is fish although it's wise to use a bit more discretion than that. Fishing from an iSUP can be done in both saltwater and freshwater.
Having said that, choosing optimal settings and conditions will increase your enjoyment as well as your safety. Deep, lazy rivers are ideal for iSUP fishing. However, fast-moving rivers with gravelly or rocky shallows should be avoided. Not only can they damage your inflatable stand up paddleboard, they also can pose a safety risk.
Lakes and bays make a great option, however you'll want to avoid windy days when the waves churn up. You will also have to judge how far to safely go out on a larger body of water. It's best to stay within a reasonable distance from the shoreline in case of an emergency or rapidly changing weather patterns.
What Type of Fishing Work Best from an iSUP?
Whether you hope to cast spinners, flies or live bait, an inflatable stand up paddleboard can be an excellent choice. One of the greatest advantages of paddleboard fishing is that you can quietly get into very shallow water (as shallow as 5 inches). That would be impossible in most anything else that floats.
Trolling lures, live bait or a combination of the two also works well. Regardless of the type of fishing you do, you'll want a rod holder for when you are navigating (especially when trolling). Trolling allows you to fish while you're moving, saving precious time that otherwise couldn't be used fishing.
How do You Land a Fish Without Falling in the Water?
Imagine hooking the fish of a lifetime only to fall overboard as you try to land it. Definitely not cool. One of the best ways to avoid this is to bring a long-handled net along (one you can use from the standing position).
If you are new to paddleboard fishing, consider using a wider paddleboard. This will give you more stability during casting, hooking and landing of fish. A bit of extra stability will go a long way when you are trying to reel in a big one.
What Do You Wear When Paddle Board Fishing?
In the summer of northern regions or year-around in warmer regions, wear whatever you're comfortable with. Of course, as with any water sport activity, you will want to protect yourself from the sun.
If you live in a location with colder weather, that doesn't necessarily mean you have to give up SUP fishing. You could wear a wetsuit and go out on days when it would otherwise be too chilly to do so. You also may enjoy the lack of summer crowds, making for a more peaceful setting.
